Celebrating 25 years of music for Swan Studio Dance

Posted: May 24, 2015

From the Canada Summer Games to the Olympics, working with Jennifer Swan to create music for her dance studio for the past 25 years has been one of the most artistically rewarding experiences of my career.  Jenn draws the best out of everyone she works with, me included. From traditional ballet to modern dance, her unique style and aesthetic sensibility allowed me to freely compose adventurous, complex and unusual pieces of music that would otherwise never have been created.

For what other medium would I have license to compose a 9-minute long melody?  Inspired by Jenn’s brilliant choreography, my works took on a life of their own, and continue to be some of my personal favourites.

Together we created the second opening number for the 2001 Canada Summer Games.  Jenn successfully blended art and athleticism for this national sporting event, and it was my privilege to underscore her brilliance.   And it was in Jenn’s studio that I met Tessa Virtue, a young dancer at the time, who would go on to skate her way to Olympic Gold.  It was my absolute privilege to work with Tessa and her skating partner Scott Moir to sculpt their music for that gold medal performance and several others.

I’m grateful to have worked with such a talented dancer and choreographer for so many years.

Happy Anniversary Jenn!
